Recently, the Union leadership has been made aware that there are those among us that continue to compare teachers at different sites for the purpose of making the case that they work harder than other teachers. Ultimately, the comparison is worse than fruitless, it is destructive to the goal of elevating all of us as professionals.
We are all teachers. We all work hard. If one could wade through the differences in our jobs and do some type of accounting that could objectify the hours spent and the effort expended in our task, there is little doubt that there would be no appreciable difference in either of the two areas regardless of the level we teach. To continue this divisive discussion simply weakens us as an organization and plays into the hands of those who would continue their past practice of denying us a tangible manifestation of our work and effort in the form of real pay raises and maintenance of benefits.
In addition to enhancing our salary and benefits, our goal is to do everything we can to ensure that our contract reflects positive and real language to bring equity to our job expectations and compensation. Our chances for success are greatly enhanced by maintaining unity within the ranks and having each member prepare to take affirmative measures to see our goals to fruition. It won’t be easy but it will be possible if we all work, act and speak as one. We all have a lot at stake. We are all in this TOGETHER!
